Should You Participate in the Veteran’s Affairs Insurance Network?

One of the most frequently asked questions by new and seasoned practitioners billing insurance for acupuncture. Due to the unique population, reimbursement rates and the preauthorization of patient visits most practitioners find participating in the VA’s Veterans Choice Program (VCP), and Patient-Centered Community Care (PC3) plans administered through TriWest to be highly rewarding.

VCP and PC3 enable you to care for veterans that may not otherwise seek out your services. Whenever a beneficiary lives too far from a VA location or the facility is unable to treat veterans within 30 days they will refer the patient to community-based providers. Dealing with the VA has its challenges, but over the last few years, the VCP and PC3 have been a great program for our community billing through TriWest. We highly recommend your involvement.

Here are a few tips to ensuring your claims get paid by TriWest:

  1. Enroll in the VCP and PC3 programs via the TriWest website. VA Provider Enrollment
(Once accepted into the network, you will receive the patient’s authorization letter via email before their first visit.)
  2. You will then need to submit all  pages of the authorization letter with your 1st claim.
  3. Please ensure that you submit all  of the following:
    • the cover letter
    • date range
    • authorization numbers
    • total visits authorized
  4. The patient's full demographics will also need to be attached, and this includes address, date of birth and full social security number. (Failure to supply this information causes delays in claims processing and payments. If you are Holistic Billing customer you will submit the information via your secure portal account)
  5. Upon the completion of the authorized schedule of treatments, you may request a new authorization when re-authorizing make sure to include items in items 2-4 above.
